Accordion Noir 2024-04-24: Fifty Years Of Co-op Radio & 30 Years of Wisconsin Polka!

April 25, 2024

On April 21st, 1994, the Polka was proclaimed the official state dance of Wisconsin. From that departure point, your host Bruce Triggs took an exploration into the wacky world of the most hated popular and fun dance fad that’s been going strong for nearly two centuries, since the 1830s!
[Bruce interjects, “Whoa Rowan, I’d say outside polka communities the style might be ‘misunderstood’ or ‘overlooked’. Polka doesn’t even make these lists of unpopular music or dances. That ‘hated’ stereotype inherited from baby-boomers has outgrown any basis in most people’s personal experience. We’re here to challenge, not spread it.”]

Bruce forgot to mention his prediction that the Polka is due for a bicentennial revival in about 2030 or so. Which should coincide with one of the reoccurring “return of the year of the accordion revivals”. So expect there to be some sort of grand squeezebox/polka conjunction in the next ten years or so where a Macarena/Beer-Barrel Polka-style hit song sweeps the planet 1830s/1930s/2030s style and two-beats us out of some global malaise. 🌏

If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can enjoy listening to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

After another little glitch, we’re back, with an hour-long episode celebrating the recent win of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Antigonish County’s own Mary Beth Carty, who we’ve been boosting here since the Myspace days (Squeegees!), plus more squeezy music along a similar vein. If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

So tonight’s Co-op Radio fund drive episode features all Canadian accordion women artists in her spirit.

I put off the party for Wisconsin’s 30th anniversary of the Polka being declared the state dance (April 20) until next week. So expect a special Co-op Radio 50th Anniversary Polka Party on Next Week’s Accordion Noir.

Many apologies for the last few week’s issues with my computer. Still not fixed after spending countless hours doing support for Apple to help them troubleshoot their problems so they can improve their products, they haven’t fixed mine. Still very frustrating.

Much appreciate your continued support for Co-op Radio and Accordion Noir these last 17 years. We couldn’t continue to do it without you.

Bruce

Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-04-03: April And Another Thing

April 4, 2024

Nothing is easy for poor Bruce, and the well-oiled operation of his getting these episodes out into the world and online is really starting to run up against rather more friction than we are accustomed to. (Maybe we shouldn’t have skimped on that bellows replacement after the first 500 thousand miles! Really it was just so impressive that an accordion-powered car drove at all!) That said, we have still managed to get another week’s episode online, so please enjoy it as best you can! April 4, 2024

Bruce’s technological issues we have recently reported on have only grown more acute as he attempts various remedies for his troubles, which have impacted our ability to get the program out to you, our faithful listeners, in a timely fashion. Here’s last week’s episode. If you know recent Apple hardware better than the bright bulbs at the Genius Bar, please look him up. Otherwise… please try to enjoy this belated recording, and do your best to dismiss the mental image of a man driven to the edge by a noncompliant machine. (Well, a misbehaving accordion is always a jolly mental picture! Maybe we will simply have to pivot to an all-live format.) Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-03-13: 17th Anniversary of the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle

March 14, 2024

Something happened last night, and this week’s episode of our Accordion Noir broadcast failed to go out over the air in time to celebrate the occasion your host Bruce had planned for: the observance of the 17th anniversary (!?) of the first congregation of the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle, which has continued meeting up for the vast majority of the months since then. (Their next gathering date is scheduled for April 3rd, so our historical anniversary observance actually falls between their present-day meeting dates, so not all that much was actually missed. Put it in your calendar, you can find the details on their website!) March 7, 2024
“Triston Downey and Ciaran McPolin, Mayobridge Band from Derry taking part in the 45th International Band Championship, Limerick

Pic Sean Curtin Fusionshooters”

Every week we share an hour (at least!) of accordion music in various styles representing different traditions from around the planet… and some of our episodes feature sub-themes that, sometimes retroactively, are surprisingly often informed by strange puns and wordplay. For this week’s program, host Bruce confides: This week’s theme is “Things with March in the title, or marches of some sort, or something.” “If you don’t like one thing, another style will be up in a minute.” That sounds like our style! If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-02-28: It was Guy Klucevsek’s Birthday Monday, so we played a bunch of random tunes

March 3, 2024

Our Accordion Noir host Bruce Triggs is experiencing some kind of computer collapse (new computer, not old — so he can’t go forward and he can’t go back) in slow motion, making every episode he painstakingly splices together on it a kind of exquisite torment. (I would reach out to our listenership for help, but unless you can out-Genius the Genius Bar, his one-in-a-million conflict has probably out-maneuvered your Mac expertise.) But you can’t tell from the set selections, which still represent a great time surveying the squeezebox world. Now you can laugh while he cries, enjoying the recording of last week’s broadcast from our weekly alt-accordion program on CFRO Co-Op Community Radio. If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

AccNoir–2024–02–28, It was Guy Klucevsek’s Birthday Monday, so we played a bunch of random tunes

Is Bruce running out of themes? Is his computer not fixed so the doesn’t want to look at it, but he feels compelled to dig into his still functioning collection to try to construct an accordion radio show every week despite difficulties? Having trouble adding new inspiration to the collection, but managing to limp along with nice sounding tunes from the back-catalog. Still don’t know how to pronounce anybody’s names after 17 years of doing this show — shameful. I believe my pronunciation is getting worse as my ears and brains fade away. Embarrassing.

Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-02-21: Birthday Festivities with Pee Wee King, Steve Jordan and a Sharp Set

February 24, 2024

Bruce maintains a peculiar kind of calendar, perhaps unique in the world, featuring the birthdays of many of the most renowned accordionists of all time. (Bruce thinks you can click this link to add his Accordion Holidays to your calendar.) That way, when it’s time for us to put together an episode of our weekly radio program, there’s always somebody worthwhile we can celebrate on that occasion! This time around, the kudo’d players are western swing champ Pee-Wee King and norteño icon Esteban Jordan. After acknowledging them, he goes on to deliver a superior specimen of our regular mixed squeezebox selections. If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

AccNoir–2024–02–21, Birthday Festivities with Pee Wee King, Steve Jordan and a Sharp Set

A couple of birthday tunes from Pee Wee King (Feb 18, 1914–2000) and Esteban “Steve” Jordan (Feb 23, 1939–2010) and then a rolling sharp set of above-average Noiria if Bruce does say so himself.

Accordion Noir radio playlist 2024-02-14: Tony Cedras and African Diaspora Accordion

February 17, 2024

Anyone can celebrate Valentine’s day by putting together a program of accordion love songs. But it takes our rare galaxy brain thinking to observe the date by memorializing South Africa’s recently-deceased Tony Cedras by putting together an African diaspora squeezebox playlist. You won’t get this content anywhere else. (Present company excepted.) If your Apple or Android (or plain old RSS) podcast subscriptions (strongly recommended!) haven’t alerted you to the episode’s availability yet, you can listen to it as digital audio courtesy of the Internet Archive. Here’s its playlist:

AccNoir–2024–02–14, Tony Cedras and African Diaspora Accordion

South African Musician Tony Cedras Dies at 72
https://downbeat.com/news/detail/south-african-musician-tony-cedras-dies-at-72

Tonight’s theme is a memorial for South African jazz accordionist and multi-instrumentalist Tony Cedras, most well-known outside S.A. for playing on Paul Simon’s Graceland tours. But Cedras was a top jazz player with a storied carrier. He’ll be missed.

In his honor we dedicate this episode to a brief tour of some African Diaspora accordion traditions. Touching on their intriguing similarities and differences, connected and divided over centuries and seas. United by history, the brutality of slavery, and the syncretic incorporation of this imported industrial instrument.

* Joaquin Diaz – ‟Cana Brava” – Merengue Mas Merengue (1999?) – Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Republica Dominicana – (The Dominican Republic is perhaps identified more as a Spanish-speaking “latin” rather than Afro-Caribbean culture, but musically the relationships between the accordion traditions seem to be worth including? And I admit, helps us meet our Canadian Content requirement 🦫 while staying nearly on theme.)

* Douglas Bellard and Kirby Riley – ‟Valse de la Prison” – 78 RPM disk (1929) – Louisiana, USA – http://npmusic.org/artists.html  Douglas Bellard is said to be the first black Creole to record, Oct. 2, 1929, just before Amede Ardoin.  Folkways’ “Louisiana Creole Music” refers to one story that Bellard may have murdered Ardoin too.
* Clifton Chenier – ‟Instrumental” – Squeezebox Boogie (live) (1978) – Rising Sun Club, Montreal, Canada
* Lightnin’ Hopkins – ‟Zolo Go (Zydeco) (Zoligo)” – The Gold Star Sessions – Vol 1 (1949) – Houston, Texas, USA – Clifton Chenier’s cousin.  The first commercial recording to mention “zydeco.” (see  Wilfred Charles’ “Dégo/Zydeco” from 1934).  Organ sounds like “96 Tears,” which probably has roots in Tex/Mex accordion.
